When you happen to visit Bromo or planning to visit it, make sure to include Madakaripura waterfall to your itinerary. Madakaripura waterfall is situated at the village of Sapih, in the district of Lombang, around 30-minute drive from Cemoro Lawang, Bromo. Madakaripura waterfall is actually a series of 7 waterfalls at the end of a deep gorge. The legend has it, that this waterfall was a meditation spot for Majapahit Empire’s Prime Minister, Gajah Mada.

To reach Madakaripura waterfall from the parking lot at the entrance of Madakaripura area, you have to take a 2-km hike along the river. It is recommended to use a guide since the path to the waterfall is cut off by the flood and you have to take an alternative path on the other side of the river. Near the waterfall you need to hire an umbrella since you have to pass below the first four waterfalls in order to reach the best spot to enjoy the beauty of this waterfall and see the next three waterfalls.

Sunrise at Bromo Before we get to Bromo’s stunning sunrise, it is better to get a glimpse on Mount Bromo. Mount Bromo is only 2392 m high but the beauty of Bromo does not rest oh his height but rather on the surrounding of this active volcano. With the other two mountains (Mount Kursi and Mount Batok), Bromo emerges from 10-km-wide crater; these three mountains stand on the sea of sand, surrounded by the crater’s wall and overshadowed by Java’s highest mountain, Semeru.

It is better to visit Bromo in dry season, from April to October but the best time is on May and June when the savanna around the base of Bromo is on its best. Bromo can be reached via Probolinggo from the northeast, Wonokitri from the northwest, and Ngadas from the southeast. But the easiest way to reach Bromo is via Probolinggo and end up at Cemoro Lawang on the northeast side of the crater. There are many tourist accommodations and facilities at Cemoro Lawang. To get the postcard picture of Bromo’s sunrise you have to take the shot from Penanjakan view point, you can rent a jeep from Cemoro Lawang to take you to Penanjakan via the Sea of Sand. The trip usually starts before 4 AM and takes around 45 to 60 minutes to arrive at Penanjakan.

In order to get the best picture of Bromo’s sunrise at Penanjakan, you should ignore the specially designed view point stage which is crowded by the visitor, take a hike down the south side of the view point stage, the path is quite steep so be careful. After descending for a couple of minutes you will find a clearance with a good angle to capture the Bromo’s sunrise and of course there won’t be many people there to compete you for the best angle.

In Bali, joyful atmosphere in a ceremony is often be built by a joged Bumbung (joged bungbung). The name joged bungbung is derived from the word joged that means dance joged bungbung dancer is also called joged and the word bungbung refers to a length of hollow bamboo. Joged Bumbung is usually staged in the evening at hamlet meeting hall or on a wide open space. The joged bungbung is always performed in a paid troupe. The five or six young female dancers (joged) dance at one time, each for perhaps 20 minutes. Costumes vary, but they almost feature a mass of fresh flowers tied in the hair.

Joged bumbung is accompanied with rindik (called grantang in North Bali) musical instrument. Unlike the bronze-keyed, xylophone – like instrument of musical group that accompany most of the performance, the keys of this ensemble are turned length of the bamboo, struck with rubber-covered mallet held in both hands. The music is very soft and mellow. One may hear it played by a soloist as background music at restaurant. But the joged bungbung group consists of half a dozen or more of these instruments, some very large bass xylophones, several of medium size, and tiny ones to ornament the melody. There are also drums and cymbal like ceng-cengs.
